Violence as a Public Health Crisis
Jamal Raheem's experience with violence which ultimately led him to The Wraparound Project and Michael Texada are the focus of this article. The article also highlights Wraparound's efforts to reduce violence by using the teachable moment to identify and address the root causes of violence. Michael explains, “To me, the teachable moment is really when the client has bare sight, when you have that real one-on-one conversation, without all the negativity that’s been around their lives, without all the stuff that they’ve been trying to deal with on their own. It’s when you tell them, ‘Yes, you can graduate, you can get a job, you can get off probation, you can get off parole.’” It is this care and perseverance that make Michael Texada and Wraparound so effective in the fight to reduce violence. Drs. Rochelle Dicker and Catherine Juillard are also featured.
