Lowest Number of Traffic Fatalities in San Francisco History

In 2017, San Francisco recorded the lowest number of traffic fatalities in its history, a feat attributed to the outstanding work of the Vision Zero SF program. Vision Zero, a policy adopted by San Francisco in 2014, aims to eliminate all traffic fatalities by 2024 through improved education around traffic safety, better enforcement of traffic laws, and engineering projects to improve road safety. Vision Zero collaborates with the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital to maintain a comprehensive traffic-related injury database. This database combines information from the police department, trauma center registry, ambulance service providers, and the coroner's office, thus providing a more accurate picture of traffic-related injuries in San Francisco and improving policy and engineering recommendations. Dr. Rochelle Dicker, Founding Director of The San Francisco Wraparound Project and Catherine Juillard, Assistant Professor of Surgery and current Director of The San Francisco Wraparound Project, oversee this collaboration.
